Tacky Mats, Sticky Mats, and Disposable Mats

It is well known that disposable mats, sticky mats and tacky mats are usually used in critical environments, clean rooms or controlled areas to protected within the manufacturing facilities.

This is to minimize the presence of both viable and non-viable contamination during production activities.

Foot and wheel contamination are the two main sources of viable and non-viable contamination and It is essential that some form of control or, preferably, removal of these particles entering clean rooms is practiced.

These particles coming from the outside, affect the productivity, the quality of the product and its cost of manufacture. Which is why, it is common use to use protection in the form of a sticky mat or tacky mat.

However, more and more issues are caused with disposable versions of these mats every day. It is time to switch to a Dycem mat.

Size and Appearance Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

On average, a disposable tacky mat has an area that is 5 times smaller than a standard size Dycem mat.

Disposable mats are too small for effective decontamination and make decontamination of cart and wheel traffic almost impossible.

Dycem Mat1

Disposable mats measures approx. 2ft x 4in. this size is so insufficient that contamination rates can only reach 73% in your clean and critical environments.

Even placing 10 disposables together, only 20% of the contamination supposedly captured potentially still enters your clean, critical areas or contamination-free areas. In addition, they are not aesthetic at all.

No matter how many standard tacky mats you put together, the risk of contamination in the areas is still very high.

By choosing a Dycem’s alternative solution over a standard disposable sticky mats, you will receive a customizable solution that can be delivered in a wide range of sizes, to meet your needs and suit your environment, whilst also reducing the risk of production stoppages due to contamination.

Health and Safety Risks with a Disposable Tacky Mat

The sticky surface of a mat you throw away, coupled with its loose fitting on your subfloor, means it is often found sticking to overshoes, can cause a serious trip hazard.

Disposable options also cannot allow for the three full rotations of the wheels, which are necessary to remove contamination from wheeled traffic, as it still allows for torn pieces of mat to wrap around the wheels.

This makes it very difficult to control cross contamination in hallways, amongst other areas, becoming a risk to employees, to your existing floor, to your facility and, ultimately, to your business.

With Dycem – this isn’t an issue.

Customisable sizing and with the underside of the Dycem mat being waterproof and made of a non-slip vinyl layer which is moisture resistant and non-absorbent, it does not slip on the subfloor like a regular sticky mat would.

Disposable tacky mats not only create an abundance of unnecessary waste, but also the cost of purchase and storage compared to their very short lifespan, make this solution very limited.

Additional risks of a Disposable Peel Off Tacky Mat

Peeling off every used disposable mat from a wrap leaves a layer of contamination for you to handle with your own hands.

When you remove a sheet, you release an average of 215,000 particles into the atmosphere.

Most of the waste particles are then released into the air and surrounding environments, or worse: into your protected area.

The peeling of a disposable tacky mat generates an average of 20 cm (8 in) of waste every time a sheet is peeled.

This is enough waste to fill several dumpsters / dumpsters in a single year. (Average estimates have proven between 8-25 dumpsters).

As the surface of the mat is exposed to contaminated particles, it is conceived to be secondary waste, costing more time to remove safely and cannot be used again.

Dycem mats however, are a washable mat in naturally sticky polymeric form, which isolates contamination rather than releasing it into the atmosphere.

A peel-off tacky mat must be removed to clean the subfloor, whereas Dycem Mats give you the option with a range of products, suited to your needs.

Further studies

Further studies have shown that the effectiveness of retention of a peel off sticky mat is only up to 27%, before the need to peel a new sheet for new use.

The performance of peel-off mats is greatly reduced with overstrikes. With every step, contamination builds up in layers on feet. This buildup of contamination on feet with not be effectively removed after on or a couple of steps on that area. In addition, particles readily transfer back onto footwear, increasing the risk of contamination.

When overstriking on Dycem a further 90.3% of particles are removed from overshoes, compared with an increase of up to 381.9% being deposited back on to the shoes using peel-off mats (Source: Dr. Tim Sandle).

This is not only wastes time, but it is also very impractical and a danger to the areas you are trying to protect.

Using the Dycem mats instead of tacky mats will help you avoid this, as quick carpet cleaning and or washing is the only maintenance required for the mat.

Dycem Mats in comparison can last 3-5 years, depending on use.

‘We are very satisfied. It is a great product that keeps all of our areas cleaner by controlling the contamination that can be brought in on shoes and wheels. The mats are also aesthetically pleasing and look professional. We see the most benefits in receiving due to the amount of dirt, controlled from the wheels of our large carts of goods.’
